At The Wheel House, we believe pottery is more than just working with clay—it’s about creativity, connection, and having a space to explore and grow. We asked our members to share their thoughts on what makes The Wheel House special, and their responses capture the heart of our community.
A Studio Unlike Any Other
For many potters, the space itself makes all the difference.
“My favorite part of The Wheel House is the space itself. I have been a potter for over 25 years and have taken many classes in windowless basements. The Wheel House is a gorgeous studio—so much light and space for everyone!”
“The kilns are run so often that there is a short turnaround time from bisque through glaze. Lots of fun glaze colors and combos. For seasoned potters or newbies, I can’t say enough good things about The Wheel House!”
Our members love having access to generous open hours, personal storage shelves, and a wide selection of supplies and clay types—everything needed to bring their creative ideas to life.
A Place to Grow & Get Inspired
Whether it’s throwing on the wheel, sculpting, or experimenting with new techniques, our members are constantly pushing their creativity.
“Some of the things I’ve been most excited to make so far are larger pouring bowls. I got stuck making mugs for so long, so I’ve had fun getting back into bowls. I’ve also had a lot of fun making my own glaze test tiles to test out different glaze combinations. Glazing has become one of my favorite aspects of pottery because you can often get such unexpected results!”
“I regularly see someone making something or find something cool on the shelf that I then MUST try to do as well. It helps push me to expand what I can do. Plus, everyone is always willing to share their awesome knowledge!”
“I love outdoor art, so I’m working on a 5 ft totem sculpture!”
From functional wares to sculptural pieces, The Wheel House is a space where creativity has no limits.
A Community That Makes a Difference
Pottery is often a solitary craft, but The Wheel House offers a place to connect with others who share the same passion.
“The Wheel House has given me a sense of community. Pottery can be a solitary medium when you’re alone in your studio, but I love having people around and making new friends. Alli, Meghan, Parker, and Reegan are very knowledgeable and always happy to give advice and suggestions. I even met a lovely woman who gave me an idea for my next vacation!”
“I have improved a lot with consistent practice, learned a ton from other members, and get inspired seeing all the amazing projects.”
“It provides me with a place to build new friendships and engage in creativity. It’s easy to get lost in a project for a few hours and get a little muddy!”
And beyond just our own studio, The Wheel House has become a valuable part of the Seacoast arts community:
“I own Seacoast ArtSpot in Portsmouth, and people were always inquiring about clay. I am happy that we have a studio to refer them to. The Seacoast community is lucky to have such a great place for kids and adults to get creative and play with clay!”
