Explore the expressive possibilities of clay in this 4-Week Figurative Sculpting Series at The Wheel House. Whether you’re new to sculpture or looking to expand your creative skills, this class invites you to explore the human face and form through observation, imagination, and personal expression. Using hand-building and sculpting techniques, you’ll create your own figure, bust, portrait, or expressive form. Your piece can be realistic, stylized, abstract, whimsical, or somewhere in between. The focus is not on perfect likeness, but on capturing emotion, movement, personality, and story through clay. During the first week, you’ll explore the concept of gesture—the energy, posture, and movement that bring a figure to life. Through quick studies and foundational sculpting exercises, you’ll learn how artists use gesture to communicate feeling and expression before adding details. In weeks two and three, you’ll build and refine your sculpture, developing form, features, texture, and character. During the final week, you’ll glaze your fired piece, adding color and finishing touches before it heads off for its final firing. No experience is necessary. All materials, tools, and firings are included. Before your first class, consider gathering a few reference images, sketches, or ideas that inspire you. These might include portraits, illustrations, sculptures, or expressive figures that capture the style, mood, or feeling you’d like to explore.
